Gingee Fort popularly called as 'Chenji Kottai' is one of the still existing Forts in Tamil Nadu. Situated in the Villupuram District of Tamil Nadu, it is an architectural marvel believed to be built by the Cholas. You can reach the Gingee Fort by a 35 km drive from the Temple town of Thiruvannamalai. The Fort covers a 3 Sq km area and was under the control of many Kingdoms in South India like Vijayanagar, Maratha and the Mughals.

Some of the notable locations inside and outside the fort are The Elephant tank: A 58 by 40 Metre Tank which is 15 metre deep specially built to bathe the Elephants. Gymnasium: Granite Building where Soldiers are trained and weapons are secretly kept. Kalyana Mahal: An attractive Indo Islamic styled building which holds many rooms and a small pond too. The Bell tower: The Top most part of the Fort from where the entire picturesque view of the fort can be seen. The Prisoners Well: Huge Well where Prisoners were condemned so that they die in hunger and thirst. There are some Temples and Mosques in and around the Fort which should be given a visit.
